On the Functional Origins of Essentialism

چکیده

This essay examines the proposal that psychological essentialism re s u l t s f rom a history of natural selection acting on human re p resentation and inference systems. It has been argued that the features that distinguish essentialist re p resentational systems are especially well suited for re p resenting natural kinds. If the evolved function of essentialism is to exploit the rich inductive potential of such kinds, then it must be subserved by cognitive mechanisms that carry out at least three distinct functions: identifying these kinds in the envi ronment, constructing essentialized re p resentations of them, and constraining inductive infer ences about kinds. More o v e r, there are different kinds of kinds, ranging from nonliving sub stances to biological taxa to within-species kinds such as sex, and the causal processes that render these categories coherent for the purposes of inductive generalization vary. If the evolved function of essentialism is to support inductive generalization under ignorance of tru e causes, and if kinds of kinds vary in the implicit assumptions that support valid inductive i n f e rences about them, then we expect different, functionally incompatible modes of essen tialist thinking for different kinds. In part i c u l a r, there should be differences in how biological and nonbiological substances, biological taxa, and biological and social role kinds are essen tialized. The functional differences between these kinds of essentialism are discussed.

This essay examines the proposal that psychological essentialism results from a history of natural selection acting on human representation and inference systems. It has been argued that the features that distinguish essentialist representational systems are especially well suited for representing natural kinds. Psychological Essentialism and Cultural Variation: Children’s Beliefs about Aggression in the United States and South Africa

The present study compared indigenous South African versus African-American schoolchildren’s beliefs about aggression. Eighty 7–9 year olds (40 from each country) participated in interviews in which they were asked to make inferences about the stability, malleability, and causal origins of aggressive behaviour. Although a minority of participants from both countries endorsed essentialist belief...

Bull Erika Salomon and Andrei Cimpian The Inherence Heuristic as a Source of Essentialist Thought

Humans are essentialists: They believe hidden “essences” underlie membership in natural and social kinds. Although essentialism has well-established implications for important societal issues (e.g., discrimination), little is known about its origins. According to a recent proposal, essentialism emerges from a broader inherence heuristic—an intuitive tendency to explain patterns in terms of the ...

Deference in Categorisation: Evidence for Essentialism?

Many studies appear to show that categorization conforms to psychological essentialism (e.g., Gelman & Wellman, 1991). However, key implications of essentialism have not been scrutinized. These are that people’s categorizations should shift as their knowledge of micro-structural properties shift, and that people should defer in their categorizations to appropriate experts. Three studies are rep...

Essentialism and Anti-Essentialism in Feminist Philosophy

The heated feminist debates over 'essentialism' of the 1980s and early 1990s have largely died away, yet they raised fundamental questions for feminist moral and political philosophy which have still to be fully explored. Centrally at issue in feminist controversies over essentialism was whether there are any shared characteristics common to all women, which unify them as a group. Many leading ...
